Intrigued after reading other blogs’ coverage of the vintage signs, ghost ads and community murals in Crown Heights, we decided to do a compilation piece highlighting these posts.  Together, they weave a picture of the rich history of Crown Heights.

Spotlighting Rooftop Films:

Rooftop Films believes that independent film has great potential to effect social change not only through its content but also through the means by which it is presented to the public. We seek to expose issues and viewpoints that are underrepresented in mainstream media. By showcasing these films in exceptional locations for expansive, diverse audiences, Rooftop Films is providing opportunities for people to re-examine their relationships to issues, communities, and urban spaces through independent film. All of our screenings include pre-show music by some of the best emerging bands, and we almost always have after parties with free beer and wine.

New Music and Art Exhibit Coming to Crown Heights

In Arts,Events,music,Openings on May 13, 2009 by LaurelB Tagged: , , , , , ,

From FiveMyles art gallery:

Curator: Yuzo Sakuramoto

Artists: Taketo Shimada, Calder Martin, Keith Connolly, Yuji Agematsu

This group exhibition will present works by New York artists who are both visual and musical artists. “Music” is loosely defined to frame the artists’ works but metaphorically refers to works in flux, shifting and flowing, traversing different boundaries, groundless, at times pointing toward spiritual transcendence. Many of the works in the exhibition are presented as still in the process of growing, or articulating the process of their unfolding, either in form, content, or arrangement. Not quite asserting ideas about cross-fertilization or the intersection of sound and image; definitely NOT a posh ‘sound art’ show, here the realm beyond our own predictability and control can be explored. CanMUSIC be expanded?

Nicolas Cage Movie in Crown Heights

In Arts,Film,Theater on May 12, 2009 by LaurelB Tagged: , ,

According to the Community Board 9 website, the filming of the new Nicolas Cage movie, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, which  began in April, will end on May 15th.  Apparently, there have been some mishaps in connection with the tapings in Manhattan.  Hopefully, that misfortune has and will not spill over to their Crown Heights film site.

The filming is taking place on Bedford Avenue between Union and President Streets.  Filminginbrooklyn.com has already posted some additional scoop on the shoot.  Get your popcorn, pen and autograph book ready.

Hawthorne Street : Brooklyn Public Library fundraiser

Hawthorne Street : Prospect Lefferts, Brooklyn: Brooklyn Public Library fundraiser.

Fundraisers are a dime a dozen these days but if I had to vote I’d vote for throwing your spare dimes to the Brooklyn Public Library. Due to the budget shortages, the library is faced with cutting hours and services. But you can help—and drink some quality brew at the same time. The Brooklyn Vanguard, Brooklyn Public Library’s young donor group, is having a party nearby in Crown Heights (or Prospect Heights, if you’re a realtor).
